Quinta da Alvarinheira still has many vestiges of the recent times when Portugal’s economy was still primarily agricultural. The poverty and underdevelopment of those times are still strongly part of Portuguese memory.
Books and records of Alvarinheira’s farming activities go back decades, as do photos and videos. To demonstrate the many profound changes that have taken place in rural Portugal in the 20th Century, we are creating a series of exhibits and videos that explain the practices, tools, and conditions of rural life before its recent disapperance.
Each exhibit is accompanied by a video describing aspects of life at the time.
Many items from the quinta’s original farming equipment now on display.
